Common Name: Argentine Ants
Color: Dark brown
Size: Workers – 1/8th inch, Queens – Around 1/4th inch
Distinguishing Features:

  • Relatively hairless
  • Musty odor emitted when ant is crushed

Body Structure:

  • Like many hymenoptera, has a very thin waist/connection between the abdomen and thorax
  • Thorax also has an uneven shape when viewed from the side
  • Workers are wingless, queens and other reproductives have wings. However, people mostly don’t see winged Argentine ants because the mating happens underground in nests and don’t do the characteristic mating flights of other ant species
